A True Beginner

100_1084

Recently I decided it was time to start getting rid of some of my baby fat (after all I have been carrying it around for some 45 years now),  and to start toning up this aging body of mine. My problem is always finding time. I’ve considered a gym but I just don’t have the time to drive there work out and then drive back home. I thought about bow-flex but frankly I just can’t see buying another clothes rack I mean exercise machine. Then I heard about this site on-line called the Daily Burn and thought I’d give it a try. I signed up and answered the site’s preliminary questions and from that they placed me in the “True beginner” category.

Now at first I was a little offended. I am not a true beginner. I’ve started hundreds of exercise programs (or maybe 10) ; But hey! that ought to at least put me in the moderately knowledgable category, shouldn’t it?

Here’s the thing I am learning. It’s not about the past or where I have been. It is about right now and what I can handle in the present. The fact that twenty seven years ago I found a great program and lost 30 pounds does not mean that as a forty -seven year old who has gained back 80 of those 30 pounds I can pick right back up where I left off. I have much lost ground to recover before I can even dream of  doing the things I was able to do back then.

As I started the first “True Beginner” exercise session I learned I was in the right spot after all.  I think I was in the middle of my third set of squats when I began having this sensation that my quadriceps were going to pop right out through my skin and run screaming through the streets that there was someone trying to murder them.  Knowing what a squat was or that it was working my quads did little to change the fact that it hurt like the dickens.

The spiritual application should be apparent. We can have all the book learning about God there is to be had but in the end all the head knowledge in the world cannot make us mature Christians. It’s not knowledge about how to walk the walk that makes us strong; It’s walking the walk and putting the biblical principles into practice that strengthens us.

Just like starting a new exercise program pains the body, so applying biblical principles for the first time will cause our spirits to be stretched. It has little to do with how long we have been Christians or how long we have known the truth. It has everything to do with being new to the exercise.

Sometimes we think that if we just hang around the church long enough our problems will just solve themselves. Sometimes we think that if we just believe long enough temptation will stop being tempting.

“That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works!” as the popular ad here in the States says.

As I approach this new exercise program I have to accept that I am a true beginner. I have to work through the aches and pains until my body gets used to the principles of use. Every time I practice a new spiritual discipline or confront a new spiritual stronghold I have to accept that once again I am in “True beginner” territory. I have to expect some discomfort to come with change. I have to give my spiritual muscles time to get use to the new principles the Holy Spirit is working inside me. But with both spiritual and physical exercise, I can rejoice that in the discomfort progress is being made.

So let me ask how do you work through the uncomfortable places of spiritual growth?

But I don’t feel like it…

Let the love of Christ fill you with His passion for living.

When you don’t feel like dieting, you probably should.  When you don’t feel like balancing your checkbook, you probably should.  When you don’t feel like working out, you probably should.  When you don’t feel like reading the bible…you probably should.  I’d even go as far as saying, when you don’t feel like talking about Jesus with someone, you probably should.

All too often we only attempt those things we feel like doing.  Now, while that might be okay when you are considering what kind of hobby or activity you’d like to do on a Saturday afternoon,  it rarely works in the real world.  There were many days when I simply didn’t feel like facing those 35 sixth graders.  And days when I didn’t feel like training with my cross-country runners.  And when I got home from those activities, I didn’t feel like mowing the lawn.  But, time after time, I did each of those…

#100happydays &C.cada Days 51-60

I have been trailing a week behind my happiness  for about two weeks now.  That isn’t  a bad thing. Breathing in happiness fumes is good for the soul! Still I thought I would catch up today by sharing some of the really good news coming out of C.cada (our artist’s collaborative).

“Wonders happen either way. With you or without you.”

Because that is true I have chosen to be part of the wonder that God is creatingthrough this incredible group of people called C.cada

This is Lisa Johnson, one of our artists. At our most recent gathering she got a little stuck. It happens. Joy comes in working through the sticking points however big or small they might be. Some call this suffering for your art. I call it creative discipline.

One of the reasons C.cada exists is so that we can encourage one another in our giftings and spur one another on to love and good works. To that end we all work on projects together throughout the year. Our monthly gatherings are about pushing each other through the dry spots so that we actually get artwork done and then together we get that artwork out into the community.

“Don’t look to others to give you happiness. Grow it within yourself and share it with the world around you. Bets are, if you give a bit of your happiness to the world, it will begin a ripple effect, and who knows how many other people you can help. It’s never too late to decide that your happiness (or whatever it is that you want) is yours to create and not the other way around.”
Leigh Hershkovich

C.cada is about sharing the joy God has to given us with the world!

Who’s It About?

I think this word is for me. Maybe it is also for you?

debbestillandlisten's avatarDebBe Still and Listen

I have been trying to work through a certain situation in my life and I have to say it has been painstakingly slow and difficult to make any forward progress.   Honestly, I feel like I am getting nowhere real fast and my patience is wearing thin?  I literally could scream out of frustration and I mean really, really loud, but I don’t want to hurt your ears so I won’t.  I can’t tell you how many times I have brought this very issue to prayer and there still is no resolution.

So, I thought God and I had to have a heart to heart.

“I’m like okay, God it is really okay with me if you step in and do something, NOW!!! ”

Then I heard this small little voice deep in my spirit say,

“Maybe this storm is about you, Deb?”

Ooo, Ouch!  I have been so caught up in how I want God to fix the other…

The small arctic seabird lives on the rocky cliffs of northern coastal regions, breeding on narrow cliff ledges in dense colonies that vary in size from some hundred pairs to hundreds of thousands of pairs.

nesting guillemotsBecause of the crowded conditions, hundreds of females lay their pear shaped eggs side by side on a narrow ledge, in long rows. The eggs all look alike, and yet the mother bird can identify her own eggs. Studies show that even when the eggs are moved, the mother knows her egg so well, that she will find it and return it to its original location.

The Right Side of Heaven

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

Billy Graham tells the story of a young girl who was taking a walk with her father one evening.  Looking up at the stars, she exclaimed, Daddy, if the wrong side of heaven is so beautiful, what must the right side be!

Many years ago, I heard Pat Boone share his early childhood definition of heaven. It suddenly occurred to him while he was sitting (or was it squirming?) in church, agonizing through one of the pastor’s typically long and boring sermons. Heaven, Pat reasoned, was going to be just like church—one thousand years—ten thousand years—forever. It was almost too much to handle. To Pat, such a state of affairs seemed more like purgatory than perfection.

But the little girl was right.  No matter how beautiful or wonderful things may appear on earth, Heaven will be more beautiful and more wonderful.  Think of all the wonderful and beautiful things we have…

Do or Do Not. There Is No Try. (Yoda, 1980)

Gotta love Yoda!

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

How many times have you heard, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”?  For many New Englanders, it’s a kind of mantra–like “pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps,” which, when you think about it, is an impossible task.  People may try to lose weight, stop smoking, cut back on caffeine, or get pregnant.  But not really.  They either do lose weight, stop smoking, cut back on caffeine, get pregnant or not.

While this is a cute chart, every step until the top is an unsuccessful not.  Only the top is a successful do.

Back on April 21st, I had a car accident when I blanked out at the wheel and drove my car off the road.  While I never appeared to lose consciousness, I did lose a little over three days of memory.  Subsequent testing seem to indicate that I have a predisposition for seizures.  Not the cardiac or pulmonary…

Advice about writing and publishing Writing and Publishing today requires a computer!

Bob Mayer says that 99% of the advice you’re hearing about writing and publishing comes from 1% of authors.

His blog post explores the question: “So how much of that advice actually applies and is it useful?”

We agree with these of his conclusions:
