According to Wikipedia, Tsutomu Yamaguchi was a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during World War II. Although at least 160 people are known to have been affected by both bombings, he is the only person to have been officially recognized by the government of Japan as surviving both explosions.  A resident of Nagasaki, Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on business for his employer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries when the city was bombed at 8:15 am, on August 6, 1945. The following day, he returned to Nagasaki and, despite his wounds, also returned to work on August 9, the day of the second atomic bombing. In 1957, he was recognized as a hibakusha (explosion-affected person) of the Nagasaki bombing, but it was not until March 24, 2009 that the government of Japan officially recognized his presence in Hiroshima three days earlier. According to Albert Einstein, one definition of insanity is, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  I think we’re all guilty of this in one way or another.  Some of us leave things to the last minute and then are unhappy with the rushed result (even though we know we need to allow more time to get the best results).  Students push our buttons and we over-react the same way (even though we know that they are simply pushing our buttons and that our reactions will not stop them). We must always be on guard!  The moment we lighten up on our daily devotions and shorten our prayer time with the Lord, boy, the enemy is right there to jump in to help out in any way that he can.  This past week has been just that for me and let me say my thought life has been filled with all sorts of doubts and lies from the enemy.

Billy Graham tells the story of Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse who was an American Presbyterian clergyman.  His first wife died from cancer while still in her thirties.  At the time, all his children were under the age of twelve.  He had such victory over his grief that he decided to preach the funeral sermon himself.

While en route to the funeral, they were overtaken by a large truck, which as it passed by them, cast a large shadow over their car.  He asked on of his children, “Would you rather be run over by that truck or by its shadow?”

“By the shadow, of course!” replied the twelve-year-old daughter.  “A shadow can’t hurt you”

 What burdens your heart?  Is it godly or worldly things or is it the God things of this world?  Last week I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Another Red Letter Day by Ben Nelson which  led me to his article “Is A Holocaust on the Horizon?” on Comments on Christianity.  I told my son about what was happening over in the middle-east and I read most of Ben’s post to him and the first thing he said was,

“That is just like what happened in WWII except they had to wear the Star of David.”  I said he was absolutely right.  He then asked, “Why would someone do that now because we’re not in WWll, right, Mom?”
