What follows is an excerpt of the message I preached at Cornerstone Church on Sunday June 26, 2016. The message is entitled:
In the Lord I take refuge.
How then can you say to me:
“Flee like a bird to your mountain.
2For look, the wicked bend their bows;
they set their arrows against the strings
to shoot from the shadows
at the upright in heart.
3When the foundations are being destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”
4The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord is on his heavenly throne.
He observes everyone on earth;
his eyes examine them.
5The Lord examines the righteous,
but the wicked, those who love violence,
he hates with a passion.
6On the wicked he will rain
fiery coals and burning sulfur;
a scorching wind will be their lot.
7For the Lord is righteous,
he loves justice;
the upright will see his face.
The title of the sermon this morning is “Run?”
In the next few days we are going to be talking about three ways that people “run” through life spiritually Two of the methods of running are harmful to us as Christians and the third is the way the Lord has intended us to run.
Now I don’t come her today as an expert on the physical act of running. Honestly I don’t know much about running. I know it’s a thing. I know it’s a thing many people like to do. For instance, I have a cousin who likes to run double marathons. I don’t know a lot about the specifics but I know she trains hard to be able to do these races. I know running involves controlling every area of her life including: her eating, what she drinks, her everyday habits and schedule, in some ways her relationships and even in a few respects where she has chosen to live.
No, I don’t know much about the physical art of running but I do know a bit about running in a spiritual race. I know there are ways of running spiritually that are helpful, and I know that there are ways of running spiritually that are harmful. Today I want to talk about three methods of running. Two of them harmful, one of them helpful and before we jump into what the methods are I want to say that at different points in my life I have practiced all three of these methods of running spiritually and probably so have you.
The goal this morning is for each of us to recognize how we are running… maybe if we are running and then to see whether that method is healthy or harmful and to decide what to do about the answer to that question from there…
Tune in tomorrow for more…
