Soylent Green Is People

OK so maybe nobody who missed the seventies sci-fi scene (that’s how it was spelled then) will get this reference unless of course you happened to see the equally arcane scyfy movie from 2012 (that’s how they spell it now) Cloud Atlas; But the line kept coming to mind as I walked through Keukenhof Gardens last year.

It was forty-five degrees and raining. Still people chose to show up with no coats. So Keukenhof staff were handing out these green rain ponchos. The hood of this very economical rain gear came down just below the eye line; So people were walking around half blind trying to look at flowers ,cutting each other off at every turn.

After three hours of nearly being trampled upon by the men and women in green, my sister and I began warning each other of oncoming danger with the buzz words “Soylent green is people!” We’d laugh hysterically and that made getting stepped on almost all right.

When I came back to the states and downloaded my pictures I thought maybe I should just delete these but they make me laugh every time I see them. I haven’t the heart to let the joke go.

Sunday Stills: Witloaf

This week’s Sunday Stills challenge is all about international cuisine.

As soon as I saw the theme I knew  the picture I was going to post.100_2163This is witloaf (pronounced Vit-loaf). It’s  chicken wrapped in bacon on a bed of endive and baked in a cheese crust smothered with a special red sauce. YUMMMMY! But what I remember about the meal beyond the great taste was the wonderful company. Thanks to Willem and Mirjam Jackson for the memories!

“God is here, right now, at our side. We can see him in this mist, in the ground we’re walking on, even in my shoes. His angels keep watch while we sleep and help us in our work. In order to find God, you have only to look around.”

The hill pines were sighing, / O’ercast and chill was the day: / A mist in the valley lying / Blotted the pleasant May.

“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”

Crayons and Crocodiles

share-your-world2 My answers to Cee’s questions this week are brought to you by the color Green.

Here are the questions and my answers:

Do you believe in extraterrestrials or life on other planets?

I’m with Larry Norman on this one.  “And if there’s life on other planets, then I’m sure that he must know. And he’s been there once already, and has died to save their souls.” Now if you asked “do you believe in little green men?” I would simply reply “But of course I am one.” 100_3052 What type of pet or pets do not want to have?

I think a crocodile or a green alligator would be not nice.

The song is a tribute to the new movie Noah (which is just fun if you accept that this newest Hollywood version is the total SCYFY version and undeniably non-biblical)

If you were a crayon, what color would you be? Green of course.

What type of transportation would you be? Why? I think I would really like a green (meaning eco-friendly) car.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I am thankful for all the friends who showed up this weekend to help an elderly couple in our church move. I am looking forward to all those who will show up this week to help us move another elderly lady (how’s that for faith?).

I search for the realness, the real feeling of a subject, all the texture around it… I always want to see the third dimension of something… I want to come alive with the object.
