Evening Meditation 4-2-16

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will live with them
    and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them
    and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
    and I will receive you.”

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.”

This Scripture is often used to advise people of faith not to marry those who do not believe. Reading the context of the verse what else might Paul be referring to as a yoke?

  1. I would assume he may also be refering to other relationships which may not be marriage. However I would not want to think that Paul is advocating for believers not to extend a hand of frierndships tothose who do not profess a faith. I guess ‘being yoked’ has a deeper meaning. I have just responded without having reflected on the passage a bit more.

  2. I’ve often thought it should be applied to business and politics too. How can a believer be yoked to an unbeliever in a business partnership? Tougher still the question – is my vote a yoking to a candidate?
