Leonor
by JE Lillie
They told me Antonio had recanted. I should have known better. The great Herezuelo would never have bent the knee. But I was a weak woman too concerned with my position and the comforts of this life. I feared the arm of the inquisition and forgot the promise of greater things. I traded my faith for the dusty trappings of religion once again.
It has been ten years since they burned my love at the stake. All those years I have spent working up my own courage. Today at last the flames lick my feet.
Leonor De Cisneros burned at the stake in 1568 for embracing the Protestant faith.

Ah, religion! Dont’tcha just love it. Beautifully written.
Thanks Patrick. It was a challenging piece to write. Actually this is not true religion. James tells us, that true religion is to “care for widows and orphans.” I wonder how different the Inquisition would have been if they had done that.
This is a lovely piece. And thanks for the history lesson, too.
Thank you Alicia! I was glad to stumble across Leonor’s story.
Well written. I like it.
Thank you Tracey!
A well written tragedy. Great Job!
Thank you so much Silverstein!
You are welcome.
🙂
Interesting story and I like the historical picture beneath. (The ad is a little distracting however)
Thanks Perry. The ad does not come up ion my feed. What are you seeing?
Very well written. I held my breath at the end!
Thank you. Your reaction mean I hit my mark.
Acto de fe – murder in the name of the same god who said thou shalt not kill. Aren’t Christians wonderful!
I find most humans are greatly sinful mick whatever faith or lack thereof they espouse. It’s one of the reasons I cannot embrace humanism as a philosophy, and embrace grace as one of life’s greatest needs.
I have discovered that hope is not found in lamenting the flames; It is discovered in the process of celebrating those who have the courage to face them. Thanks so much for reading and giving me such a rich comment to engage with you on!
How we forget that God and faith in him doesn’t need protection !
Lovely rendition Lillie !
Thank you for this encouraging comment Horus. The ability to look beyond this life to what lies beyond is one of faith’s greatest weapons!
What’s being done and what’s been done in the name of religion is totally impossible for me to comprehend.
No denying Bjorn. It is incredible how humans can take something so pure and corrupt it to such a level and then rationalize it as a righteous act. It is a testament that the Scriuptures are true when they declare “The heart is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9
Redemption and grace are things we all need.
And yet as I was telling Patrick the Inquisition is not an example of true religion. James teaches us that “True religion is to care for widows and orphans.” It does not create widows and orphans!
Good job on this one Joe.
Thanks Dawn!
An interesting piece of history, great story.
Thank you!
First I came across ( might be wrong for not following order )
to mention the Inquisition so two thumbs up, Tay.
Very powerful piece on the choices faced by people during those times – abandon your religion, bend to the Inquisition and live, or defy the Inquisition, stay true to your religion and die.
Dear Pastor J,
Beautiful example of being willing to take a stand. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks Rochelle.
The Spanish Inquisition was horrible history! Good story which makes me think that we really need to be careful who we let govern us. Good job! Nan 🙂
Many cruel things have been done by men to other men in the name of religion. Similar things are still being done for that reason. Well done Joseph. — Suzanne
It is true and religion is the worse for it. Somewhere deep within still lies the crystal of pure faith. We only have to look.
