In Other Words: The Heart-Hole

In Other Words

Well here we are for another week of “In Other Words” the flash fiction writing challenge where Patricia gives us a quote and we have to write a story on it. You can find other contributions to the challenge at

This week’s quote is…

“Stop worrying about the potholes in the road
and celebrate the journey”

I found him sitting in his living room with the curtains drawn. The floor was littered with empty bottles. He hadn’t changed his clothes in days.

“What are you doing to yourself son?” I held my hand to my nose trying to block out the stench of  stale sweat and booze which assailed my nostrils.

“She’s gone dad. She took the kids. What am I going to do?”

Tear stains streaked dirty lines down his cheeks etching age and weariness in every corner.

“You are going to open the curtains and start living.” I said sternly.

I threw back the thick velvet drapes she had chosen and thought to myself they would be the first things to go. The sunlight glinted off the photos of my grandchildren. He squinted in the brightness. I felt a lump of pity rise in my throat.

“Go shower.” I ordered.

Once I heard the water running I cleaned up the empties and tossed the wrappers of too many nights of take out into the trash.

My son had fallen down a  hole in his heart. It was deep but then I had climbed out of similar pits. We could do this together.

I went to the radio and turned up the music.

Share Your World 2015 Week 12

Can it be we are well into double digits already? One quarter of the year done?

My-dee-my-dee-my time is just absolutely flyin’ out the window!

Well, Cee has four… no five fantastic questions for us this week. You can see other contributions to the question collection at

Now let’s get to the fun…

When was the last time you sat on a park or garden bench for more than ten minutes? Describe the occasion.

I think the last time I sat on a park bench for longer than 10 minutes was last summer when I visited my son Joe and we went to Longwood Gardens. He had to work so I spent about 10 hours in the garden moving from bench to bench.

Would you ever be interested in observing a surgery or do you turn away when the nurse brings out the needle?

I never look when the nurse brings the needle for the shot. Surgery should be slept through as far as I am concerned even if you are in the waiting room.

Where’s your favorite place to take out-of-town guests?

There is this little fish place in my town called Little Anthony’s. Great New England Fish dinners!

If you had an unlimited shopping spree at only one store, which one would you choose? Why?

Oh golly I guess it would have to be a plant nursery or a book store.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am so grateful my daughter and son-in-law found an apartment near their work places and I am looking forward to helping them move this next week.

Friday Fictioneers: The Leader Of the Band

I simply could not miss another week of Friday Fictioneers. It has been too long since I have crafted a story for this forum. So here I am putting together another 100 word flash piece to go along with the stories of about 100 other authors throughout the world. You can find their stories here

The Leader of the Band

by JE Lillie

I used to mutter all the way to the bandstand. I lamented the Saturday night’s lost, listening to a bunch of old fogies play music no one cared about.

Mom and dad along with most of my uncles and aunts made up the community band. Then there was my cousin Richie. Always the suck-up he had jumped at the opportunity to play trumpet alongside my dad.

Richie was a waste of time and space, I thought.

Then came my father’s last concert. He passed after a stirring rendition of “Stars and Stripes Forever”.

I have envied Richie’s “wasted moments” ever since.

Call for Submission -FILL THE CRACKS POETRY PROJECT

liberia-orphanages-2013-18-0f1a7462a2

Though this project/ book thematically  is open for interpretation,we would like you to consider how you  as a poet can write a “song” that conveys one of the following: sadness at the loss for these children left alone,  a message of hope to the children, and  a call to the community at large to remember these little lives as they forge ahead. This is meant to be a work of encouragement rather than a sounding board for political opinions.

More information is available at Fill the Cracks. The deadline for submission is June 1st. We still have room for more poetry, but the book…

It’s Breathtaking!

What will it take for His love to captivate you?

debbestillandlisten's avatarDebBe Still and Listen

Do you long to be in His presence and to know His love? I do and I can’t seem to get enough! Our church as a whole has been reading through Sarah Young’s “40 Days with Jesus-Celebrating His Presence” as a daily devotional. Not only are we reading Sarah Young’s “40 Days with Jesus-Celebrating His Presence” our pastors have been delivering some great messages on the subject of ‘Celebrating His Presence’. A couple of Sundays ago Pastor J delivered an awesome message entitled Pastor Wrinkles:  Complete Worship  and you can find it at Lillie-Put.

The excerpt below is from his message, Pastor Wrinkles: Complete Worship pt. 5 and has been resonating in my soul for the last couple of weeks.

I want us all to capture the heart of worship. That is a heart that has eyes only for Jesus. It is a heart that let’s go of…

A Must Read!

Just bought this and added it to my reading list.

Encounters With Jesus First of all I want to say thank you to Ben Nelson for giving me the privilege of reading his  book, Encounters With Jesus.   Ben Nelson from Another Red Letter Day  is quite a gifted writer. I had the awesome privilege of reading through Ben’s book, Encounters With Jesusbefore publication to which I am eternally grateful. The very first time I read one of his encounters with Jesus stories I was hooked. Ben’s style of writing reminds me of the authors of the Left Behind Series-Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.   Not only could I not read these stories fast enough but my 11-year-old son was hooked just like I was. I encourage you to check out his new book and considering purchasing an extra copy or two as a gift.
