Between Turbo Follow and House On Fire I have been having some great discussion with some wonderful disciples of Christ this week! Keep up the good works gang and while you are at it check out these other bloggers from Cornerstone Church in Winchendon MA

Here is today’s discussion:

We are going to jump here to Acts Chapter 19

19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. 2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them.

“No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3 “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked.

And they replied, “The baptism of John.”

4 Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.

Why do you think the baptism in the Holy Spirit had not been preached to these men prior to Paul’s arrival?

Why do you think Paul pursued the issue of baptism in the Holy Spirit with these men?

C.cada: Writing Prompt

Deb is one of our dedicated artists!

C.cada is a community for Christian artists to get together and practice their art work whether it be writing, painting, pencil drawings, water-color,  photography, wood carving, musical/instrumental, fabric art, etc.  Pastor J of Lillie-Put is the founder of C.cada (Cornerstone Christian Artist Day Apart) and we were given a group art project back in January of this year. He gave us this writing prompt (He heard the crunch of autumn leaves behind him.  He turned...) that had to be incorporated in the short story somehow and it had to be 500 words or less. All of the short stories will be displayed at the C.cada Art Show this October.  Here is my short story,  The Woods.

The Woods

He heard the crunch of autumn leaves behind him.  He turned slow but sure not to make a sound.  He peered around his son’s favorite oak tree; visibility was difficult for dusk was upon him. Nothing crossed his view, shrugging…

Changing Perspective

Sometimes it’s not our circumstances that make us helpless. Rather it is our perception of our circumstances that bind and paralyze us.

Turbo- Follow Week 4

imagesCA74DISE

Cornerstone Church Winchendon is into week 4 of a congregation-wide study written by, Daniel McNaughton and Bryan Koch, entitled Follow: Learning To Follow Jesus. Each Sunday our pastoral staff is preaching from one of the seven attributes covered in the book while the congregation reads the daily devotions and participates weekly in a life group focused around the topic at hand.

The group I am tasked with leading has been dubbed “Turbo Follow”. Rather than approaching the class as a traditional Bible study we have chosen to act as an accountability group. The class begins with a brief overview of the daily devotionals. Then participants break into smaller, accountability groups. Each group participant asks questions of their fellows concerning the teachings. At the end of each class individuals are asked to decide what God would have them do in light of what they have learned. Then we pray for each other.

This post is a weekly follow-up of our class. For those of you who are unable because of business or geography, to join us on Thursdays this blog is a perfect way to virtually join in on the fun.

Last week our devotion covered Learning to Listen to Jesus:

Here is a summary of the daily readings from Dan Mcnaughton’s Book,  Follow:

Day 1: Learn to Be Happy: Blessedness is a state of mind not bound to physical circumstances.

Day 2: Learn to God to the Source:  God is our source and His Word reveals the course from the source.

Day 3: Learn to See Jesus in the Scriptures: The whole Bible points to Jesus. He is the Word of God and the Word of God is about Him. History is HIS- STORY.

Day 4: Learn to Overcome Temptation:  Part of listening to Jesus is obeying Him and walking away from the old behaviors that kept us away from Him.

Day 5: Learn to Be Productive: As we listen to Jesus our lives become reservoirs of His power and Kingdom success. The amount of success we experience depends on the condition of our hearts which Jesus likens to soil.

Here are the questions we asked each other during group:

  • 1.    Tell your group one thing you did last week you think God was happy about. Now tell the group one thing you could have done better. OPEN YOUR GROUP BY PRAYING THAT GOD WOULD HELP EACH PERSON IN THE GROUP TO WORK ON THE AREA THAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT.

 2.     On  a scale of 1-10 how blessed do you feel today (1 being not very blessed and 10 feeling totally blessed). Explain to the group what makes you feel that way today.

 3.     Of the four types of heart soil we discussed: Pathway soil, rocky soil, thorny soil, good soil what kind of soil has your heart been like this week?

 4.    What could you do this week to help make the soil of your heart even better?

Don’t miss group this week. We are talking about God’s desire to heal us body, soul, mind and spirit!

The Dream House

It’s Share Your World time again!

share-your-world2This week Cee’s questions are all about our dream homes.

Would you prefer a reading nook or an art, craft, photography studio?

I want all three please.

Would you prefer the TV in the living room or another room?

I would keep the TV in the Living Room but if I had my druthers I would have a library that was fit for entertaining in just off the dining room

What color would you like your bedroom to be?

I like green a nice calm green. Oh wait I already have that.

Would you prefer a one floor house or multiple levels?

I would love to be on one floor with a sunken living room.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful to be working with a great team of people committed to creating an art center in our hometown. I am looking forward to this week’s meeting.

Book Crawl

I am so glad that as they have grown my children have gained an appreciation for books.

This year as a Christmas gift I gave my girls a book crawl and this weekend was the weekend for it.

Friday night I picked up James, my daughter Melanie’s fiancé in CT and brought him back to MA.

We met at my ex-wife’s house for dinner and to make plans for the wedding. Once my oldest daughter got home from work we headed to my house for a long winter’s nap before our Saturday drive.

On Saturday morning we left Winchendon at 8:30 A.M. and headed South.

Our first stop was Tatnuck Booksellers in Westbourough. I found a comfortable chair and opened my Kindle to read while the kids poked around.

They found nothing at bookstore number 1 but at bookstore number 2 in Worcester we hit pay dirt.

Amanda is a quick shopper. Melanie and James are consummate browsers. After two hours Amanda had a bag full of books and Melanie and James were still weighing their options. So I took Amanda on a walk back into childhood.

By the time we finished we were all famished. I was truly ready for a cup of coffee

Then it was on to Niantic CT for a crawl through the Book Barn.

Since James and Melanie both had to be back at their respective churches for ministry on Sunday morning we wrapped it up at the Book Barn and then I dropped James back off in Oakdale CT (he is a children’s minister in Norwich CT) and then we shot up to Haverhill MA for Melanie’s house (she is a children’s minster in Saugus MA). Amanda and I got in just before 11 and settled in for a good night’s rest before our ministry calls at Cornerstone (Amanda does children’s ministry at Cornerstone and I had to lead worship)

It was a great 14 hour day. One old wrinkly minister and three young eager ministers now each have ten more books to read!

What? Me Worry?

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God; Believe also in me.  (John 14:1)

I’m a big fan of to-do lists.  Part of that is because at my age I tend to forget things if not reminded.  The other part is the sense of satisfaction I get when I can begin to check off things off the list.  So when I saw the image below, I said to myself that this must be for me.

Dr. Vince Havner, preacher and writer in the early 1900’s once said, Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair.  It will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.  Some physicians tell us that 70% if all illnesses are imaginary, the cause being mental distress or worry.  It has been listed by heart specialists as the number one cause of heart trouble.  Psychiatrists tell us that worry breeds nervous…

100_3610“So all night long the storm roared on:
The morning broke without a sun;
In tiny spherule traced with lines
Of Nature’s geometric signs,
In starry flake, and pellicle,
All day the hoary meteor fell;
And, when the second morning shone,
We looked upon a world unknown,
On nothing we could call our own.
Around the glistening wonder bent
The blue walls of the firmament,
No cloud above, no earth below,—
A universe of sky and snow!”
― John Greenleaf WhittierComplete poetical works

I have heard we have another foot of white coming on Monday.  A universe of sky and snow indeed!
