David’s Dance (2 Samuel 6:12-23)

This was a great thought from Lillian! Never be ashamed to praise the Lord! He is far more than worth it!

lillianl17's avatarGrowing Up, God, and Being Busy

I remember sitting in the seats of my church when I was young and feeling God call me to go up to the altar call. Still a timid, lukewarm Christian, I was scared to go up in front of everyone and praise the Lord. I look back now and wish I had heard the story of unashamed David who danced for the Lord.

…So David went to bring up the ark of God… to the City of David with rejoicing… Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might… ~2Sa 6:12-14

David was thankful for the blessings God had given him so much that he didn’t hold anything back when praising Him. He wanted to worship the Lord with his movements and let the Spirit lead him. He didn’t care what his people would think, he knew that God’s opinion was the only one that mattered.

The Word of God is a bridge that connects Earth with Heaven and Heaven with Earth.- Joseph Elon Lillie

We are entering lesson thirty-seven in this on-line class concerning the Book Of Acts. If you have missed the last few discussion you can find them here

http://wp.me/P39vIx-Gh

I would love to hear your on thoughts as we continue on.

I know I am going back into our last lesson a little bit but it does bear going back over a bit.

16 One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a demon-possessed slave girl. She was a fortune-teller who earned a lot of money for her masters. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”

18 This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.

19 Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace. 20 “The whole city is in an uproar because of these Jews!” they shouted to the city officials. 21 “They are teaching customs that are illegal for us Romans to practice.”

22 A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. 23 They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.

25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized.34 He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.

35 The next morning the city officials sent the police to tell the jailer, “Let those men go!” 36 So the jailer told Paul, “The city officials have said you and Silas are free to leave. Go in peace.”

37 But Paul replied, “They have publicly beaten us without a trial and put us in prison—and we are Roman citizens. So now they want us to leave secretly? Certainly not! Let them come themselves to release us!”

38 When the police reported this, the city officials were alarmed to learn that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens. 39 So they came to the jail and apologized to them. Then they brought them out and begged them to leave the city. 40 When Paul and Silas left the prison, they returned to the home of Lydia. There they met with the believers and encouraged them once more. Then they left town. Acts 16:16-38

Today’s questions:

List all the miracles you see in this passage (big and little). Which of the miracles you see here is the most amazing to you? What about that miracle makes it so impressive?

Share Your World 2014: Learning To Be Content and Having a Bit To Go

share-your-world2

So Cee’s post this week has me thinking about my level of contentedness. I like to think of myself as a pretty content guy. You know, ducks and water and rollin’ off the back and all that. But as I looked at Cee’s questions this week I realized I might not be as contented as I first thought.  Paul the apostle said: Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Phil. 4:11-13 NIV

I realize I have a ways to go before I get there; So thank you Cee! I am going to use this post to practice my contentment affirmations! What an opportunity!

If you had a choice to live anywhere would be your preference salt water beaches, forest, fresh water lakes, hot tub, ski resort or desert?

I love each of these locations but God has given me a great home in North Central MA. I get the privilege of living in a coniferous rain forest. We seldom have anything close to real drought. The weather changes regularly so I don’t have time to get bored and the four seasons show themselves in full splendor. I am sixty miles out of Boston and just a little farther from Providence. The rocky beaches of the Atlantic are only an hour to my east. The Green Mountains White Mountains and Berkshires are all within a day’s drive. That means hot tubs and ski resorts are all just around the corner!

What was your favorite toy as a child  . . . and now?

My favorite toy as a kid was my magic set and now I would have to say it’s my Kindle. I recently thought my Kindle was broken and I was pretty sad about that but I prayed and guess what? It turned back on!

Which do you prefer sweet, salty or both at the same time?

Both at the same time. Salty chocolaty stuff is really yummy. Dunkin Donuts here in MA started selling Salted Caramel hot chocolate this year Yum Yum!

Would you prefer snowy winters, or not, and why?

Oh heavens! This is where I have to really work to bring up the level of contentedness I am an enemy of the cold. As we await the arrival of Winter Storm Nikka and her foot and a half of snow I am bolstering my attitude with thoughts of salted caramel hot chocolates! By this time tomorrow this will be me.

Be Careful What You Wish For

Where do you find your contentment.

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

What is your definition of success?  Is it to have a great-paying job?  To make a difference in the lives of those around you?  To be respected? To have a solid marriage?  Ultimately, happiness seems to revolve around how we deal with money–not in money itself.  In Hebrews 13:5, Paul writes, Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

When we’re locked into the striving-for-money maze, there are many dark corners that lead nowhere good.  With God’s help, we can either go around the maze or find a more direct route through it.

Unfortunately, many get lost in the maze.  Based on what we see in movies or television or read in books or magazines (or online) or hear on the radio, it seems that many are focused on the…

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: A Step Out My Front Door with J.R.R. Tolkein

The theme of this week’s Fun Foto Challenge is Walk 100 Steps or Less and Take New Photos. When you are done here I challenge you to step on out my door into the wonderful world of Cee and see what her other contributors have shown from their own front porch.

http://ceenphotography.com/2014/01/28/cees-fun-foto-challenge-walk-100-steps-or-less-and-take-new-photos/

cees-fun-fotoThe challenge got me thinking of a quote from J.R.R. Tolkein’s, The Fellowship Of the Ring-

“He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. ‘It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,’ he used to say. ‘You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
― J.R.R. TolkienThe Fellowship of the Ring

That one quote took me off on a side road with the master of fantasy. It is true! Just going out the front door of my house has plunked me in the middle of many interesting journeys.

A view to the right

A view to the right

Some of those journeys were bound up in self-interest and self-advancement.  Of such thing Tolkein says, “We have come from God, and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light, the eternal truth that is with God. Indeed only by myth-making, only by becoming ‘sub-creator’ and inventing stories, can Man aspire to the state of perfection that he knew before the Fall. Our myths may be misguided, but they steer however shakily towards the true harbour, while materialistic ‘progress’ leads only to a yawning abyss and the Iron Crown of the power of evil.”

Of course I never wanted to admit such counsel was correct. It flies in the face of so much I learned growing up. It took me some time but I have realized the more I think of myself and my own comfort the less I actually enjoy and am comforted by life. As I travel outward I am learning day by day that the more I brush up against others, the more I give them of myself, the more I am in turn blessed by the sojourn here.

I have been to places I am certain I never would have gone by choice, but the One who seems to have made the choices for me is by far a better choice-maker than I shall ever be. These roads have led me on great adventures all of which somehow bent the road back home and turning there  have found the place more welcome than when I left it.

Straight ahead

Straight ahead

“Roads Go Ever On

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.

Roads go ever ever on,
Under cloud and under star.
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen,
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green,
And trees and hills they long have known.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with weary feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone.
Let others follow, if they can!
Let them a journey new begin.
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.”

The Word of God is a bridge that connects Earth with Heaven and Heaven with Earth.- Joseph Elon Lillie

I have really been enjoying our discussions through the Book of Acts. God has been helping me to grab a better understanding of the context in which this book was written. As I study I find myself wondering about many things concerning the administration of the early church. The more I read the more I think just how intentional the movements of the Holy Spirit, and those of the men and women who followed Him, were. I see in the story of Acts  men of tremendous vision, like Paul, who  geared the church for exponential growth from the get-go. As inheritors of that legacy then how can we do any less?

Well enough soap-boxing. Here is today’s discussion:

11 We boarded a boat at Troas and sailed straight across to the island of Samothrace, and the next day we landed at Neapolis. 12 From there we reached Philippi, a major city of that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. And we stayed there several days.

13 On the Sabbath we went a little way outside the city to a riverbank, where we thought people would be meeting for prayer, and we sat down to speak with some women who had gathered there. 14 One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth, who worshiped God. As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying. 15 She was baptized along with other members of her household, and she asked us to be her guests. “If you agree that I am a true believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my home.” And she urged us until we agreed.

Paul and Silas in Prison

16 One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a demon-possessed slave girl. She was a fortune-teller who earned a lot of money for her masters. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”

18 This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.

Acts 16:11-18

Just a quick point of interest.  Because Paul could not go into the mountains according to his plans he headed for the coast and ended up launching out for Macedonia (Greece) from Troas, which was the ancient city of Troy. On arrival in Macedonia he started his work in the city of Philippi. The church he planted there would later inspire the Book of Philippians.

Allow me to ask:

The demon possessed woman in our story here followed Paul around for several days before he dealt with her. Why do you think Paul chose to handle things this way?

A Word A Week Challenge: Putting It All In Place

This week Sue has given us the word CONTEXT  to work with.

If you want to see how other authors have dealt with context go visit Sue at

Context is defined as- the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed.

My daughter’s trip to Thailand for her senior internship was done in the context of her desire to spend a summer in Africa. The trip to Thailand was all but paid for though, so she took it never expecting to find God in the midst.

Determination, energy, and courage appear spontaneously when we care deeply about something. We take risks that are unimaginable in any other context. Margaret J. Wheatley

She did find God though. In that place on the other side of the world from where she thought she would go, God  gave  her over to discoveries that filled her with passion and courage to try new things.

Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Reinhold Niebuhr

On the surface she couldn’t make sense of what God was doing or how this series of events worked toward His plan. It may not have been Africa but she still got to ride elephants. She also got to do many of the other things she thought she would be doing in Africa.

In the end location or specific situation may not make much difference to God’s plan for our lives. These things may affect how the plan is carried out but they won’t change the plan. God is the larger context in which we live. Trust Him.

Have you ever been in a situation that seemed to go against what you thought God wanted to do in your life only to discover it was part of His plan all along? Tell me about it!

Then check out the video on this sight. Context is key!
