I wonder sometimes if our new generations have the same kind of friends that I had as I was growing up.  It sometimes seems as if our “do everything online via phone or tablet” generation is missing out on actually being with and talking to real friends.  I know many parents who are concerned about who their children want to befriend.  Based on what some “friends” post online about others (and even what some post about themselves), I’m not sure how many even understand what a friend is. There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24).  I think that the simplest instruction for being friendly is simply, Do to others as you would like them to do to you (Luke 6:31).  It’s hard to go wrong with that.

I retired from teaching two years ago.  I still know many of the teachers at my former school.  And I occasionally see some of them in and about town at various meetings, grocery stores, restaurants and the like.  Without exception, they have all told me that I left none too soon.  Now I understand that teachers can be a complaining lot and that, by virtue of what they do, they almost always think they are in the right.  Doctors, lawyers, and politicians probably think the same thing.  But between “political correctness” and “New Math” and new evaluation tools, both for students and teachers, I really don’t know how teachers actually find the time to teach with all the pre-planning, documentation and grading that they have to do.

She had studied her face in the mirror so many times that she had lost count over the years. It is so hard to study a face that you particularly don’t like to look at. The nose was too big, the cheeks were too rounded, and there were way too many sunspots and that was just some of the features she did not like. Maybe it wasn’t the actual features themselves that she didn’t like but rather the camouflaged image that stared her down every single day.
