Evening Meditation 9-18-20

More than four years ago I embarked on a meditational journey through the Psalms. My practice has been to move verse by verse through the book asking meditational questions of my readers. You have come up with some great answers over the years, but I have provided few.

I have now finished the journey of asking about the Psalms. Now I have begun asking you about the Proverbs. While I begin that work I am also now beginning the journey of thinking on and answering my own questions through the Psalms. So! Let’s continue:

On May 21, 2016 in the evening meditation I asked:

Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction. Psm. 1:1-6

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED OUTLINED IN THIS PSALM?

There are many differences between the righteous and the wicked: The righteous avoid sin while the wicked embrace it; The righteous avoid mocking others while the wicked make it a normal part of life (ouch!); The righteous are hungry for the Word of God and study it voraciously while the wicked find it so boring they would rather watch T.V. than enter into a study of the word of God; The righteous bend but don’t break and their lives bring forth lasting fruit while the wicked not only break their lives work is forgotten by history; Finally all of this is because of the last big difference, the Lord watches out for the righteous and even when they start going the wrong way He turns them around while He lets the wicked go their own way into destruction.

Mid Afternoon Meditation 9-18-20

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head
    and a chain to adorn your neck.

10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
    do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
    let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
    let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
    and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
    we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
    they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
    where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
    they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
    it takes away the life of those who get it. Proverbs 1:8-19

How is wickedness self defeating?

Morning Direction From Scripture 9-18-20

What did your mother and father teach you about life and godliness (even if it was by a bad example)?

Midnight Meditation 9-18-20

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2for gaining wisdom and instruction;

for understanding words of insight;

3for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,

doing what is right and just and fair;

4for giving prudence to those who are simple,

knowledge and discretion to the young—

5let the wise listen and add to their learning,

and let the discerning get guidance—

6for understanding proverbs and parables,

the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and instruction. PROVERBS 1:1-7

Talk to me in general about what foolishness is.
