Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Psalm 32:5

This passage got me thinking about a conversation I had the other day with someone. Do you think the removal of guilt is the same thing as the removal of shame or are they different things?

When I refused to confess my sin,
    my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude Psalm 32:3,4

The discipline of the Lord here seems like a harsh thing. but in other places in the Bible we are encouraged to see such discipline as a boon. How is the Lord’s discipline a good thing?
