I hate those who worship worthless idols.
I trust in the Lord.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love,
for you have seen my troubles, Psalm 31:6,7

Wow, this is amazing–Pastor Robert Morris (Southlake, TX–Gateway Church) preached this morning on exactly this!!
To answer your question–idolatry causes distance, loss of intimacy with the Lord–and how can we trust someone we aren’t in intimate communion with? We can’t.
It is true. I think this is a go to question when we are struggling with the question of trust in God. What are we putting in front of Him and his will as more important?
AMEN, AMEN, AMEN! And the cool part, as I listened to the message today, was that I had NO condemnation–only the rich (graced) ability to look back to a recent past and see where I’d made various things and people idols, leaving God to 2nd place. It’s a great victorious feeling, when we get past that and see that life goes so much better when HE IS FIRST. When we get that lesson down, we’ll recognize when/if we start to do it again–and we’ll choose better and faster, because once you know something, you can’t “unknow” it 🙂
Amen!

What is this hate you speak of?
It’s an interesting question Dawn. Our culture is blowing in a hurricane of hate and has been for the last year. Jesus told us that he was leaving us a new command, “to love one another.” and that we were to even “love those who tortured (or persecuted) us.” I see no place for hatred of individuals in the Scripture. I do see a place for hating the acts that people do which destroy themselves and others but I see the only solution to those acts being the remedy of love. As Paul the Apostle wrote we are to overcome evil with good.
I was hoping someone would ask the question. 🙂
