Fix That Car! Fix That Porch!

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “If I Had a Hammer.”

Last night my daughter called and told me she needed a new water pump in her car. Last week I learned the ABS computer in my mini-van is toast. The price for these fixes? $700.00 and $1500.00 respectively. Right now I wish I was a mechanic and I had a whole auto shop in my back pocket.

My front porch made it through another winter but more pieces of it crumbled to dust in the winter freeze. I wish I was a natural born carpenter and that working with wood felt as natural to me as the moving my fingers across the keyboard.

So many are jealous of my voice, my musical ability, my quick way with words or the speed at which I read. Honestly sometimes I think I would trade those gifts to be mechanically inclined. Still I realize each of us has a gift and we are called to use it and not covet someone else’s gift. I know if I am just faithful to God with the gift He gave me He will make a way for the things that I have no gifting for to get done.

  1. I know it may not be as easy as saying it but this is where the boy of believers are supposed to come together and help each other out. But sadly this is not taught nor endorsed by the church anymore. Again very sadly to the detriment of the church and the believers. They will know us by our love for one another.

    • Oh I don’t know Mike. I think it’s taught. Maybe we need to strengthen the teaching a little bit. My daughter’s need was met by someone in the body of Christ and someone from their church made sure that both James and Mel had a ride to church. Maybe my problem (and the musing in the article) is pride. You know it does seem more manly to swing a hammer than to sing a high G. Isn’t it true that at some point we all want what the other brother’s got?

  2. What a great point, much appreciated form someone who is self proclaimed mechanically inept. Of course it doesn’t help the budget much but we are word people so I will deposit your words in my account and hope for a positive balance rather than a negative one.

  3. Don’t forget being an electrician for the kitchen lights. 🙂 Jay I have to tell you – you are wonderfully and fearfully made and I would not have you be one ounce different than you are. You are my Big brother, my wise council, my best friend and confidant….and frankly talented and have a wonderful heart and mind. Don’t desire to be anyone but who God made you…and then Ask Him to send you the people you need to help-at a price you can afford. 🙂 Love ya big bro! Have a great weekend!
