Passage or Portion?

100_1806

“This world is our passage not our portion.” Matthew Henry

I hear a lot of talk these days about the end of the world. Conversations about Armageddon (the meaning of that word is different from person to person) are becoming normal chatter not just from the church pulpit but in the grocery line, at the gas pump, even at the doctor’s office. The level of fear attached to such conversations is always dependent on whether or not the end of the world is seen as a loss or as a gain.

Now you might ask, “How can the end of the world be seen as a gain?”

Well for Christians the “end of the world” is a misnomer. When we talk about the end-times we are not talking about the end of everything just the end of this age and this world order. We are talking about the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise  that “The meek will inherit the Earth.” We are talking about the destruction of sin and death and the reinstatement of Jesus as King of the World.

In that time big changes are coming. The establishment of that new order comes through the judgment and destruction of the old order. Things valued by the old order will be lost. Frankly, there are things in the old order that we humans, even we Christian humans, really like. Things like war and poverty and famine will be absent in Jesus’ kingdom (and everyone shouts Hallelujah!) but also missing from Christ’s reign will be things like the vote, freedom of religion and R-rated movies ( many of us would be Okay with one and two but try to take away James Bond and Jesus just might have a mutinee on His hands!)

What Matthew Henry said is true; This world is just a place we are passing through. It is  not our reward. We aren’t supposed to get too comfortable here because this world with its “comforts” is passing away. So Christian don’t be afraid when you see your current way of life fading away in the collapse of the world around you. Jesus said,

Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Ma. 24:4-14

In light of this truth, hold on to Christ. He was at the beginning. He will usher in the end. He will take those who trust in Him beyond the end into the inheritance that truly is our portion!

Share Your World Week#10

share-your-world2

Wow! What a perfectly massive weekend it was! I had hoped to get a few extra posts written this weekend in between events and well that just didn’t happen. I am glad to be here at the start of week#10 sharing my world with Cee once again and of course all of you readers!

You can see how others chose to share their worlds or learn how to share your own world  at

Share Your World – 2015 Week #10

Now here are the five sharing questions for the week and my answers

When you lose electricity in a storm, do you light the candles or turn on the flashlight? How many of each do you own?

We have flashlights on each floor and candles in just about every room as well as hurricane lamps in the living room filled with oil. But we do not generally lose power in our neck of the woods.

You are given $5,000 and the chance to exchange it for one of two envelopes. One envelope contains $50,000 and one contains $500. Do you make the trade? Why or why not?

Sure I would make the trade. A fifty-fifty chance at $50,000.00 would be enough for me to risk trading $5,000.00 for $500.00 And 500.00 is nothing to sneeze at.

What’s your first memory?

I have lots of early memories. I remember one-armed Joe who helped my father in the kitchen at the college in Vermont where dad worked. He used to play soccer with me. I remember my first nightmare of a giant man in a Hawaiian shirt falling out of the wall into my bed to squash me. I remember staring into the blue gazing ball on my grandmother’s front lawn while gramma hung clothes on the green clothes line. I remember my cousin’s parents owned this old school bus. I remember my sister and I locked ourselves inside the bathroom on the bus and could not get out.Uncle Tom had to rescue us.

What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something?

I generally pray. It puts me in a peaceful mind and I can fall back to sleep.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am glad I was able to get everything done through this last weekend. Even one of my projects is off to the publisher. I am looking forward to preaching in church this Sunday!

Blog Pitch Party 2: Pitch Your Blog And Attract New Followers

What a great idea!

Austin's avatarThe Return of the Modern Philosopher

invitedSince Spring Training has started, I’ve certainly got pitching on my mind, Modern Philosophers.

However, not all pitching is limited to the type that takes place on a baseball field.

I’ve been thinking about the wildly successful Blog Pitch Party I threw back in July, and I thought it was time to host another.

As you know, I’m also a screenwriter.  When I was lived in California, I’d get invited by producers to a pitch meeting.  Basically, they’d ask about my scripts, and then based on a few sentences from me, they’d decide if they were interested in reading any of them.

keep wrtingI thought that same progress would work perfectly with blogs.  Why not bring a little Hollywood to the blogging world, Modern Philosophers?

In the comment section, pitch your blog.  Give us the name, a link, and up to three sentences describing your blog.

If you choose to participate…

It’s a Dog’s Life

Oh to have the faithfulness of a dog!

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

The origin of the phrase used in the title, began as a reference to the hard life of the working dog: sleeping in a damp barn, chasing rats and other intruders, living on scraps, etc. Today, however, it has in some circles acquired the completely opposite connotation.  The phrase has been trace to century when dogs would guard homes and small communities, were fed scraps, slept outside and had short lives. so it meant life wasn’t good.  That dogs are well fed, groomed, pampered, sleep inside and live longer, so it now means a good life
