Now let’s be off to today’s collaboration, shall we? Acts 9:32-43 NIV

32 As Peter traveled about the country, he went to visit the Lord’s people who lived in Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, who was paralyzed and had been bedridden for eight years. 34 “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and roll up your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up. 35 All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.

36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”

39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.

40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. 43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.

In these two instances we see Peter operating in great authority commanding healing and miracles rather than asking for them. How did Peter come to the place of operating in this authority? Is this same level of authority available to every believer? If so what stops us from moving in it?

Cee’s Which Way Challenge: No 13

Y’know I haven’t done a photography post in a while. I am beginning to miss the art form. I thought I would give Cee’s Which Way Challenge a try. To see other ways people have expressed themselves for this challenge please go to   http://ceenphotography.com/2013/11/13/cees-which-way-challenge-no-13/

Here are my thoughts on the subject:

The Way of the Lorax

The Way of the Lorax

The Lorax said nothing. Just gave me a glance…
just gave me a very sad, sad backward glance…
as he lifted himself by the seat of his pants.
And I’ll never forget the grim look on his face
when he heisted himself and took leave of this place,
through a hole in the smog, without leaving a trace.
And all that the Lorax left here in this mess
was a smal pile of rocks, with one word…
UNLESS.”
Whatever that meant, well, I couldn’t guess.
That was long, long ago.
But each day since that day
I’ve sat here and worried
and worried away.
Through the years, while my buildings
have fallen apart,
I’ve worried about it
with all of my heart.

“But now,” says the Once-ler,
“Now that you’re here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It’s not.

“SO…
Catch!” calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
“Its a Truffula Seed.
It’s the last one of all!
You’re in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back.”

Wresting With God (Genesis 32:20-32)

Lillian is my senior high intern. One of her objectives besides learning the ins and outs of ministry is to practice her devotional writing. I hope you are blessed by her first efforts.

Jacob Wrestles With God

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,” he answered.

28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

29 Jacob said, “Please tell me…

Share Your World 2013- Week 40

share-your-world2

Great day in the mornin! These are some great question from Cee this week. I hope you will avail yourself of her other contributors at   http://ceenphotography.com/2013/11/11/share-your-world-2013-week-40/

Now on to the weekly queries:

Do you plan out things usually or do you do them more spontaneous (for example if you are visiting a big city you don’t know)?

I hardly ever do anything unplanned unless it’s to spontaneously skip something I had planned to do a week ago. It never use to be that way. Five years ago I didn’t even know what a planner was and then ministry started getting really busy and suddenly I started missing things I was supposed to be doing.  My scheduler keeps me and the congregants I work with sane.

Do you play video/computer game? Which one(s) or most recent?

The most recent video game I played was pong in 1982.

In a car would you rather drive or ride?

I would rather ride! At least I think I would rather ride. It has been so long since I sat in the passenger’s seat I am not really sure anymore.

Since adolescence, in what three-year period do you feel you experienced the most personal growth and change?

These last three years have been rife with change. Nothing is the same as it was three years ago. Growth occurred by default but isn’t that usually how growth works?

A Rose by Any Other Name Still Has Thorns

Ken’s readership is growing! Check this out!

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

Roses are beautiful creations.  They may vary in size, color, and even in shape.  But they still have those nasty thorns.  No matter how careful I am when I handle them, I always stick myself.  In Paul’s 2nd letter the Corinthians, he notes, To keep me from being proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me. (2 Cor. 12:7)

You might think that a mighty apostle like Paul who was given so much by God to share with the New Testament church would be able to pray away this thorn.  After all, he had already endured 39 lashes five times, been beaten with rods three times, and been stoned once.  He had come through to the other side of each of these times of suffering.

Paul prayed three times for God to remove the thorn.  With all that he had…

The Word of God is a bridge that connects Earth with Heaven and Heaven with Earth.- Joseph Elon Lillie

Many thanks to Daryl, Rob and Debby who took part in our last discussion on the Book of Acts. Daryl and Rob both have blogs of their own and let me suggest you check them out by going to

Daryl at   http://darylgstewart.net/

Rob at    http://www.robsreallife.com/

I look forward to hearing from you dear readers as we discuss together the book of Acts.  If you need to catch up on any of our discussions to this point you can find them at https://josephelonlillie.com/pastor-wrinkles/house-on-fire/

Now for today’s discussion starter: Acts 9:23-31

23 After many days had gone by, there was a conspiracy among the Jews to kill him, 24 but Saul learned of their plan.Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. 25 But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall.

26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. 28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.29 He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews,[a] but they tried to kill him. 30 When the believers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.

Saul of Tarsus (soon to change his name to Paul) never would have been accepted by the church if it were not for an elder who stood up for him among the brethren.  Barnabus  whose name means “Son of Encouragement”, took Paul under his wing and gave him the platform from which he could launch a world-changing ministry.

Tell me about a Barnabus in your life. Why was it important to have that person in your corner?

Does God want to use you as a Barnabus? What would it take for that to happen?

Who Do You Pick?

I pick Christ! This is potent stuff.

I honestly had no idea where I was going with this blog post when I started it. I had one line in my head, and I went with it.

Take a short trip with me back to middle school when you were standing on the playground with a group of kids from your class. It’s time to play kickball. The big moment has arrived to pick teams. It’s obvious who will get picked first, and the back and forth begins. “I’ll take him.” “I pick her.” And it goes on until there are one or two geeky kids left, standing there looking like hair gel at a bald man convention. Very out of place. Reluctantly, each one is picked up by a team, but everyone knows they won’t be allowed to do much. They were picked because they were the last ones standing there. The only options remaining.

Sometimes I…

Sin Is More Than a Choice.

God sent His Son, Jesus, to set us free from sin’s ruling power, but not from its influence. This is where we need to accept and depend upon that ultimate sacrifice daily (hourly, or minute by minute if necessary) in order to overcome sin’s constant influence.” That right there is some powerful stuff by Ken. We have to trust Christ’s sacrifice and we have to be willing to sacrifice our own comfort to overcome sin’s influence! Read on!

Ken Knowlton's avatarartistdayapart

Most Christians are taught that sin is a choice.  And we like to think that most of the choices we make are good ones.  Many of us are even willing to admit that some of our choices are less than good–we may even be able to call these bad choice sin.  Few of us take the time to realize that the Bible makes it clear that sin is more than some stupid mistakes.  It’s more than a choice; it’s a power.  That’s why Paul’s letter to the Romans talks about sin ruling.

There is a story told in the One Year Unlocking the Bible Devotional about a large group of people going on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to one of the Pacific islands.  Many are traveling in economy class, some are traveling business class, and a few are in first class.  Everything is going smoothly en route until suddenly an alarm sounds. …

Heaven Pt. 133: How Many Times Around the Mountain?

100_2941

“But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law. They killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies. So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies. “But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.” Neh. 9:26-28 NIV

Today’s “Heaven” verses speak to the mercy of God and the sinfulness of man. God brought the Israelites into the Promised Land, the place of blessing,  but the blessing didn’t change their willful hearts; So they entered into a cycle of sin that went something like this: The people sinned; God sent judgment; The people repented and cried for help; God heard from Heaven and sent a savior; As soon as they felt safe the people sinned again; The cycle repeated.

I think all of us can relate. If not current, this cycle has been common to all of us at some point in our lives. Some of us made excuses for the cycle blaming circumstances or other people for our cyclical sin;

“If only I had less stress I would…”

“If only I made more money I could stop…”

“If only my spouse weren’t such a jerk I could…”

Our verses today teach us that the problem is not with the world. It really has nothing to do with externals. Neither external stressors, money issues, nor your spouse have the power to make you sin. Sin comes from an inner proclivity towards disobedience and rebellion which we all carry. Until we cop to that and stop making excuses we can never be free. Until we stop trying to fix the outer world and address the real problem, which is with our hearts, we will keep going around the same mountain of bondage.

But as soon as we admit we are the problem and that only Jesus is the solution…as soon as we ask Him to change us rather than the world, we can  leave the mountain and enter our own Promised Land!

What is your mountain today?
