Pastor Wrinkles: The Lenten Journey Pt. 27

Brent Curtis asks, “If God is the author, producer, and director of this play, what kind of story is He telling?” The Sacred Romance. p. 54

There have been times in the course of my life when I have looked to Heaven and said “If this is the plan I think I could do better.”

The longer I have served Jesus, though, the better I have come to understand that His plans are often couched in the garb of  difficulty even faux-failure in order to set God’s enemies in disarray. Further His chosen path for me is designed to enlarge my life not my comfort. The life I would choose would keep me comfortable and happy but would do nothing to perfect my character or fulfill my potential.

It is the same with all of us. All of our hearts, plagued by sin, lead us astray and away from God’s intended purpose; So God weaves a story, a plan, around us that is large enough and tough enough for us to come to life in. We are forced either to run from God or submit to “God’s fierce intention to use both crippling and blessing to redeem us from our self-redemptive and purgatorial stories.” The Sacred Romance P. 66

I see that the over large vision God gave me as 2013 began was ready-made to push me down a path towards healing. As I have accepted that the large story is just large enough for me to live in, the way is becoming easier. The strategies are becoming plain before me and I am coming to a new peace. The cost of the dream  does not outweigh the prosperity it promises.

Have you ever struggled with God’s plan? How did you work through it?

Pastor Wrinkles: The Lenten Journey Pt. 26

What a wonderful day yesterday was. I started the day with a very productive blogging session; I spent some time  playing with the puppies and praying. I had time to practice piano and then I took my daughter to the movies to see Oz the Great and Powerful. I got home had some supper and was getting ready to do some reading when I noticed the letter on my table. It had come in the afternoon post. The return address was from the Mass State Department of Revenue. Since I have already filed my taxes and they were e-filed with a direct deposit I knew right off what the letter was.

When I am on the highway I generally set my cruise control. It saves gas by keeping me at a steady pace and with it  I can always be sure I am within the speed limit. You know those moments when you are in cruise control, when you know because you’re in cruise you are within the limits of the law? Yet even knowing that, as soon as you see a State Police car in the distance your first instinct is to slam on the brakes and slow down because you fear you still could be caught doing something wrong. That is the exact feeling I had as I opened the assessment letter last night. I have been responsible with my taxes. I have an accountant who knows clergy tax law. I keep records and they are easily reproducible. Yet my first thought last night was “I am being audited! It’s the end of the world! I will owe my entire life’s savings and be destitute…out on the street!”

The world is full of evil reports. Evil reports are the threatenings and sometimes the realizations of trouble which a common occurrence in our universe. They are: the troubling doctors report, the divorce papers, the bad report card, the pink slip and a thousand other little messages that we are not safe in this world. Jesus went so far as to tell us..” In this world you will have trouble.” John 16:33

The question is not, “Will trouble or evil reports come?” The question is “What will we do with them when they arrive?”

We have some choices. We can:

1. Receive the evil report and give up. This choice leads us to fatalism…doing nothing  because we believe that the evil thing  is inevitable.

2. Receive the evil report and worry. This choice leads us to fear. With this choice we help the evil report to grow into a monster that consumes all of our life and feeds on our hope until we are nothing more than burned out shells. In this scenario we become paranoid self-fulfilling prophecies of the terrible things we fear.

3.  Hear the evil report but refuse to accept it on the basis of God’s promises. This choice leads us to radical faith that wrestles with God until He grants us a blessing.

The world is full of evil and evil reports. But it is also filled with the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Jesus did say that in this world we would have trouble but He also said “Take heart for I have overcome the world!” John 16:33

I am not going to allow myself to worry about the tax assessment thingy I have coming up. In fact I am believing that this is going to turn out for my blessing and for a witness.

What helps you to disregard the evil reports in your life?

Pastor Wrinkles: The Lenten Journey Pt. 25

100_0220

It is hard to believe that Lent is better than half way over. I cannot wait for Resurrection Day. I am believing that God is going to do mighty miracles on that day to celebrate His victory over the grave! He is already performing so many wonderful things in my life. Everyday HE is bringing me some new form of healing or revelation.

Today’s Scriptural meditation was from Titus 2: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good  works. Titus 2: 11-14 ESV

The grace of God is here with us right now. That grace is the power of God to do that which we could not do for ourselves. As we open ourselves to it grace trains us, schools us in how to live godly lives and those godly lives are for the here and now. You don’t have to wait until you get to Heaven to have victory over addictions or deep-seated wounds that cause bad behavior. The grace of God is present now to help you in this age. If grace can change me it can change you. Do not give up let His grace work on you a little while longer and you will see a change. You may have been born with a bent to sin but if you let Jesus in He will will tun you around so that you have a bent towards righteousness. No one is beyond His reach. No one!

Have you ever felt you were beyond God’s help? What did you do?

Pastor Wrinkles: Happy In the Heart Attack Pt. 7

Yesterday we finished by saying…

There is a day of healing and forward advance coming to you. When that day comes will it find you ready to embrace the work of God or will it find you calling out “sour grapes because you have not prepared for the fourth step to being happy in the heart attack which is…

Commit to serving God no matter what the cost.

In the gospel of John Jesus  basically asks Peter if he is willing to commit no matter what the cost.

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter,“Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him,“Follow me!”

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” John 21:15-22

How about you? Are you willing to commit to Jesus no matter what the cost? What if it costs you your job? Your family? Your life?

Thomas Merton said, “A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all. No man can serve two masters. Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.”

So what is your life like today? Is it spiritual or un- spiritual? Are you sold out for God or sold out to the world?  Has your heart attack pushed you closer to Jesus or has it pushed you away from him?

What must you do in light of these answers?

Pastor Wrinkles: The Lenten Journey Pt. 24

Winter Storm Saturn dumped another foot of snow on us last night; So the church office was closed this morning while we waited for our snowplows to arrive. Working from home gives me a bit more time to study, pray and network, a slower pace. Even being snowed in I found myself feeling rushed, pressed to accomplish more. Since the only rush this morning was to hurry up and watch the snow fall I think I must be generating my own stress. It begs the question, “How much of the stress I feel is placed on me from outside sources and how much is from my own expectations?”

Yet another matter for prayer…

How much stress do you place on yourself? Is any of that stress helpful?

Today’s quotes:

“You must learn to let go. Release the stress. You were never in control anyway.”
―    Steve Maraboli

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time.”
―    Leonard Bernstein

“In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.”
―    Fred Rogers

And my favorite stress quote of all…

“We must have a pie.  Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.”
―    David Mamet

Pastor Wrinkles: Happy In the Heart Attack Pt. 6

We have been talking about steps to take in order to survive and thrive through life’s heart attacks. Yesterday we made the point that  we must be ready to embrace God when He shows up.

Jesus told this parable about being ready for God’s move…

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

There is a day of healing and forward advance coming to you. When that day comes will it find you ready to embrace the work of God or will it find you calling out “sour grapes
because you have not prepared for the fourth step to being happy in the heart attack? That step is… See you tomorrow!

The Good Shepherd  Pt 2

house

Silhouette stood at the door stamping the cold out of her feet. As I ushered our church “prepper” into the wood stove warmth I was caught by the irony of her visit. She had never been to my home before. Our interactions had been limited to conversations before or after church. Yet here we were at Doomsday and she was the first guest to come knocking.

“Pastor! Thank God you are still here.” She said.

“Where else would I be Sil?”

“Well since the power went out and the cars are all dead, I thought maybe we’d hit the rapture but if you’re still here, well then I guess we can rule that out. That just means everything I’ve been talking about for the last few years is coming to pass.”

“So  you don’t think the power is coming back on?” I asked.

“If this was tied to some storm maybe but Pastor you know as well as I do that this is something else.” She returned.

       “How’d you get here, Sil?”

“My horse. I put her out back to keep her from prying eyes if you don’t mind.”

I took her into the dining room. With the blackout curtains pulled back to let in the late winter sun and the help of an antique foot warmer the room  was almost sixty, passable for warm. I thought for a moment, as I placed the steaming cup of coffee in front of Silhouette, how quickly I had adapted to the expectation of cold.

“Am I the first to come?” She asked.

      I nodded.

“There will be more. They’ll want to know if you’re still here. There will be questions about being left behind, the tribulation. There’s going to be trouble Pastor, panic and the bad’s going to come out of people. Are you ready for it?”

I was taken aback. I had been so busy thinking about how to keep warm I hadn’t thought about what the long-term effect would be on the population around me.

“You have to be ready. If Christ hasn’t come He soon will. That makes this the great falling away. How bad it is will depend largely on you.” She took a long sip of her coffee and stared hard into my eyes over the rim.

That visit was two months ago. The power didn’t come back on by Sunday; But well over a hundred people showed up for church layered and bundled against the cold that seeped through every crack in the old white building. As Silhouette had predicted they came to make sure that I was still feet firm on planet earth and they hadn’t missed out on the blessed hope. Once that issue was settled they wanted to know what God was doing and what they were supposed to do next. By that time I had already framed my thoughts from twenty  conversations with people who, like Sil, had shown up at my door for comfort.

The points of my sermon that morning were: This is not the rapture. This is not the tribulation. The rapture is coming. The tribulation is coming. Guard your hearts and stay ready. God is with us.

I’ve wondered since then if my theology was off.  The hospital ten miles away started losing patients the day Silhouette arrived. Without the help of a back-up generator oxygen tanks stopped working. Bathrooms backed up and were overflowing within a few days.

Funeral parlors were among the first to contract with the local horse farms for wagons to move the dead. I have performed thirty funerals in sixty days and I know this is just the beginning. The frailest among us have shuffled off their mortal coils. In the first month sickness was our enemy. In the second it has been famine.

When my mood darkens I take to the cellar and sit among the shelves of dry goods I stockpiled over the last few years. The last outsider to be in this cellar was Silhouette. She was gratified that I had at least listened to her words and was prepared.

Her advice that day was, “You are one of the few who ever took me seriously. Don’t let anyone know about this  if you want to live.”

Pastor Wrinkles: The Lenten Journey Pt. 23

100_0220My daily dose of revelation today came during our morning intercessory prayer meeting. On Thursdays I run the sound board and Pastor Brad, our youth pastor, runs the meeting. We shared the needs from our congregation and missionaries.  Brad shared his devotional and then released us into private prayer for about 20 minutes before calling us together to pray over the needs.

As I settled into my spot in the sunlight I heard God tell me , “Just be still and know that I am God.”

As I wandered down the holy rabbit hole deeper into the presence of God the Lord began to show me that fulfillment in life comes from obedience to God’s plan and not from results. He showed me that I am called to the journey of ministry and that I am wired in my inmost being to receive satisfaction from obeying that calling. He showed me that when I pursue the calling, satisfaction comes from the proper pursuit NOT from the fruit.

All my life I have been taught that success and satisfaction lie in reaching the goal and the goal is to outdo everyone else. I see now when that relative said “J. will never be a success nor will he be able to take care of himself.”  He was speaking out of his paradigm that success and caring for oneself meant having the most and being better than everyone else; Because of this I have understood excellence only in the context of competition and so I had no need for excellence because I didn’t want to compete with anyone.

The Lord has shown me, though, that excellence is found not in reaching the goal ahead of everyone else or better than everyone else. In fact excellence does not deal directly with the goal at all. It deals with the way I walk this journey. Excellence deals with how fully I obey the calling of God. Excellence is found in being true to God in living. I see if I can just be true to the calling…if I can just focus on following God I will be satisfied and God himself will take care of the results. How liberating is that?!?

Pastor Wrinkles: Happy In the Heart Attack Pt. 5

Yesterday we finished by saying… waiting is not just doing nothing while we are waiting for the God bus to show up. Biblical waiting is continuing in what we know to do until God shows us what we don’t know how to do. It is continuing in what we know even though we know that the continuing is not the answer. It is continuing in what we know because that is all we have of faithfulness to God and because  waiting will always eventually lead us to step three in becoming happy in the heart attack which is…

To Embrace God when He shows up…John 21:7-14 says,

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them,“Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

As soon as Peter realized that the Lord had shown up, he abandoned his fishing and put all His focus on getting to God. So many people miss God when finally He does arrive because they have let bitterness blind them. In your waiting look for God and keep yourself in readiness to jump into the water like Peter did!

Have you ever been tempted towards bitterness because you thought you were being forced to wait too long? What did you do?
